10 Questions Insanely-Awesome-Late20s-Indonesian-Woman-Like-Me-Tired of Answering

This time I am not posting about my traveling experience. However, I am traveling to India and I already created the line of my writing. Probably I will write my India experience down on this blog next month. Well I just had dinner and the conversation was kind of boring, I was asked (over and over again) about these questions (Those were asked like more than 20 times in 2014, seriously? Yes!). I am reacting this time. Writing on blog, they said, is better than doing physically and verbally violence. Warning: Use your advance level of sarcasm.

1. You took sociology as major,it is not as difficult as math, just common sense, do you ever have to study?
No, because interviewing people, analyzing their behaviour, and writing 20 pages of paper a day based on theory and evidences were much easier than studying for a test. At least, I spent a whole day not sitting on your butt. Thanks.

2. Why did you choose to work in government institution? Isnt it boring and corrupt?
Do you know passion and logical personal choice? Yes, government institution could be boring and corrupt if the people who work there are incompetent, frustated and have no idea to solve complicated problems like you. Thanks.

3. When are you getting married?
It is of course even beyond my imagination. When will you die? Thanks.

4. Why do you like traveling abroad and alone? Is it boring or awkward?
I belong to anybody when I am traveling alone, I had some awesome experiences with locals. Yes it is boring and awkward when it turns to somebody who lack of adventurous sense like you travels. Thanks.

5. Are you running from something  here when you are traveling abroad?
Yes, I am running from stupid morons like you. I have no reason to be a person like you. Thanks.

6. Why did you take your hijab off?
I dont need social stamps to define my spirituality and relationship with God. However, i put my hat up to those who wear. Thanks.

7. But, hijab increases your dignity and it is protecting women, isnt it?
What if I told you that countries with biggest hijab wearer are in the most dangerous countries for women?
What if I told you that I know some European guys who have fetish at hijabi girls and they are easily get turned on when they see hijabi girls just because those girls are mysterious for them?

8. Are you single now?
Not available for people like you. Thanks.

9. Tell me how could you present in international conference?
Do you know  what is better than intellectual orgasm? Thanks.

10. Tell me how you manage your passion in applying schorlarship?
I have been dying inside. Thanks.

Hanoi and Singapore: Another Infinite Journey Sent By The Past

This trip to Vietnam wasnt started when I got the news that our abstract was accepted for a conference in Hanoi, but it started three years ago. I guess (again) universe brings this journey like Boom! Here you go!. Three years ago my brother works in Italy wanted to meet me during his business trip at Kuala Lumpur. I desperately wanted to go though I wasnt really interested to travel. It had been a year we didnt meet, but unfortunately I could not go because I had no passport, just havent applied for it yet.  I was 24 years old and no passport, clumsy I admit. So thats why I finnaly applied for passport though I had no idea where to travel and what for, if finaly I dont use it after five years that would be still cool.

When the immigration officer handed me my passport, he smiled and asked, So where are you going to fill your very first trip, Miss? My answer was like....

                                                          Source : 9gag.com

Then suddenly I answered Vietnam. That would be cool I think, and I didnt know why I mentioned that country.  After years I passed Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, UAE, Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany and Malaysia, I asked my self When am I going to Vietnam? Considering my self financial crysis, maybe the next traveling abroad would be in two or three years. To be honest my sallary is only about USD 300 each month, for you who think that you have to be rich to travel, you are limiting your self! Just start it!

So, couple months ago, big boss told me that a professional organization was calling for conference papers at Hanoi, Vietnam, I applied for a research abstract that hasnt been done and I have no idea how it was accepted. >_<.  So... Here was the journey...

I booked (cheap) flights from Bandung-Singapore-Hanoi-Singapore-Bandung and got USD 250 for round trip. I made another cheap booking for hostel through hostelworld.com and saved a USD 60 hostel room booking for 6 days 5 nights. Blessed skyscanner and hostelworld developers!
Flight to Singapore from Bandung was a bit rough, I guess the pilots lost their balance, but finaly landed safely in that all-are-artificials-country and left it after three hours for Hanoi. Noi Bai Airport welcomed me in a sweaty afternoon, Vietnameses told me it was the hottest autumn there. Autumn? Yeah, I thought Hanoi is in tropical country. I recommend you to travel here in summer, April-August. That would be the best time to explore Hanoi and especially the famous Halong Bay.
Traveling to Hanoi and Halong Bay in October was very misty. I will explore Halong Bay in further paragraphs.

You can employ a taxi to the down town from Airport, there were many travel agents in the airport offered taxi from airport to Old Quarter or other places. It takes USD 13 by taxi, otherwise you can take bus number 17 to the down town/ Long Bin Bus Station, they will charge you for 7000 VND or USD 0. 6, but you have to wait until all seats are filled. If you want to hire a taxi, I recommend you to hire in the airport, dont walk out of the airport unless you want to take bus because taxi outside airport could be much more expensive. Dont wish for Hanoi city bus map because it is not available.

We touched down in Hanoi Kim hotel in Monday afternoon, i could barely see sun light that time.  First surprise was... the hotel staff could not speak English and we both dont speak Vietnamese either. We showed our booking print out then she talked to us in complicated spelling, we kept silent then she called the hotel owner and we talked on phone, thanks God, the owner speaks English! She came, asked for passports, then we checked in and relieved :D

Hanoi Kim hotel was very clean and comfortable. It is not located near tourist sites, if you decide to spend nights there, taxi to Old Quarter is very expensive (USD 5) because of the distance. I considered it was very close to our conference plenary hall (Vietnam Convention Center). Yeah and it was very closed, only 10 minutes by taxi and we paid for 30000 VND or USD 2.5 for single trip taxi. Talking about Taxi in Hanoi, I recommend you to show the map from your spot and the address to the taxi driver because the dont speak English mostly and showing maps is good to avoid scams. I read  other travel blogs and they recommend some taxi s such as Mai Linh, ABC and Taxi Group, but a friend of mine got scammed by Mai Linh in Ho Chi Minh, so I always showed the map and address to driver through google map when I was there.

Overall, Hanoi was nice and a little bit stressing because many people riding motorbike are addicted to always turn their horn on everytime they pass other motorbike. Yes, in Indonesia we got many motorbikers but not as crazy as people in Hanoi. Motorbikers with their rice cookers on are frustating. Yes! Rice cookers! Vietnameses call helmet as rice cooker, no rice cooker, no life. If you dont put your helmet on, there would be no life.

What I love most from Hanoi are the public places and food. Pho is noodle soup you must try! Where to visit then? They have  wide and many public places, most of them are arround lakes. The most beautiful lake was located near Old Quarter, the name is Hoan Kiem Lake. The lake mesmerized me especially at night. You can see beautiful lights there and just sit in the middle of flowers park and trees, watching the crowded public place. Good place for jogging as well. For luck believers, you better visit this place in afternoon when the gate to another island in this lake is opened. Vietnameses believe if you cross the gate and bridge then your wishes will come true. Cross the street near the lake and dont miss the water puppet show near Lenin Park for 100. 000 VND, it ends every 8 pm, it is most wanted as well, so.. you better prepare to queue. International Post Office is also available here, so you can just buy and post postcards nearby.

I wonder why Hanoi city manager doesnt build for better public transport system. The figure of motorbikes and dwellers are not as many as in Jakarta or Bandung, so they wont face complicated traffic there. I wish they could build better city bus transportation such as transjakarta or maybe Mass Rapid Transir (MRT) ways.

I met other Indonesians and new Vietnamese and Pinoys friends there. We had fun and shared many stories and best practices about public service in our home country. It was nice to know how ASEAN countries do public service reform and enhancing competitiveness where there are challenges and few resources as well. Especially Vietnam, though they are ruled by communist party, they open huge foreign investment and improve their public service.

We went city exploring together to Vietnam Ethnology Museum (very nice place covering history of Vietnam culture and beautiful lay out as well) and Temple of Literature where confucianism grew in Vietnam. Last day we went to Halong Bay locals call it Dragon Bay-, it was 3 hours from Hanoi. This one of UNESCO Heritage Sites looked so surreal because of the weather that time. Nothing more romantic than staring at the islands and have lunch on boat. Dont miss to visit Thien Cung Grotto and Floating Fishing Village. They are wonderful.

So the next day after a warm good bye to our new friends, we headed to Singapore.  I have been here before and it was still same, artificials. But i am happy finaly my office mate touched down at Merlion as she wished :D and after a week stayed as minority in Hanoi, I felt wonderful met immigration staff in Changi Airport praying room and she smiled and greeted Assalamualaikum, I replied Waalaikumsalaam, see you again Singapore, I hope for transit to Europe next year! :D

Manglayang: Another Beautiful West Java Weekend Getaway

I paused, inhaled and exhaled my breath fastly, that was the first 60 minutes hike.

Can we stop and sit for a while? Are we there, yet?

Come on, keep on hiking, it is 15 minutes from now, Candra, one of my trekking mates said. He kept talking, laughing and hiking many steps ahead me like... effortless. I climbed mountains when I used to be high school student, to Merapi, Merbabu and Lawu mount in Central Java. This track must be easy for me, but I climbed mountain nine years ago, so it took a lot of effort for me this time.

It had been more than 30 minutes after that. Damn it, the track got more slippery when we reached the steep of the track, high level of slope. I mean most ways of the track are like that. The trekking way was so small, you have to stand and hold a tree to give other people from opposite direction to acces the way. The most embarassing moment was when i fell in front of high school students then they shouted Come up, Maam! You must make it! Come up! They called me Maaaam?!? Haha! I am 27 and I am not that old to climb this hill, kidos!

Finally we reached the top of Manglayang hill. Manglayang is located in Jatinangor, Sumedang, West Java, Indonesia. From Bandung, you can take shuttle bus from Balubur Town Square to Jatinangor for IDR 15000, ask the driver to drop you at Padjajaran University then take ojek (rocking motorcycle taxi) to Kiara Payung. We started to hike from Kiara Payung Camp Center. For amateur hiker like me, it took 6 hours to reach the peak of the hill :p.

It was difficult to go down and I got knee pain due to adjusting the gravity. Lol, I should have done jogging everyday before took this rute. Even though it was painful and tiring, the view of the hills is worth struggling, we got many view like this in Indonesia actually;

Met A New Friend from Lombok

If you check my posts last year, or maybe last two years, you would find my story about Lombok, but this time was different. This journey to Lombok brought a different meaning for me. I met a new friend of mine. Amazing friend. Talks, laugh, experience and cry, all were so exciting until I forgot to take a picture of us together.

I believe everything in my life does not happen for no reasons. You may get boring but I am surely bringing this universe thingy this time :p again-. Universe provides all we need and just come at the right time. God never plays dice. Yeah, Einstein, thanks Sir! At least your idea about universe keeps me to not give up on my will. Anyway, my meeting with this new friend from Lombok happened in very unique way. I knew her from a senior researcher in office. The way I met this senior researcher was very unique as well. You know, my first year in this office was a bit disaster, misused administrative stuffs,  unclear research basics, lack of participation, and many people think me as abnormal geek. They stared weirldy and said O my God, what the hell are you reading? You remind me of someone who used to be here and she will surely come soon, Some people in office told me that the way and topics I talk and my face were almost similar with this senior officer who is Mbak Kris. I never met her before, because she was finishing her master degree in Japan. When I met her for first time, we were just connected easily. We both like traveling abroad alone and some nerd books. She gave me a book at my last birthday. She said; Happy birthday! This is a good book, surely you would like it, and I want you to have it, As someone who deeply understands what 'a good book' means, I know what an honor it is to receive end of such kindness. She gave me The Power of Habit, a book from Charles Duhigg. You can read my review about that book here.

So, kids, thats how I met Mbak Kris, my senior officer. Lol! Yes, I was intending to explain about someone else. Sorry, when my blog gives me spaces to write freely, it drives me crazy and I got the cells in my brain mixed just because each story is connected. Go back again to my story meeting this new friend from Lombok. She met Mbak Kris accidentally when Mba Kris was on duty in Lombok. Her name is Mbak Nursyida. In Indonesia, especially ini Javanese culture, you add Mbak before the name to call sister or woman older than you.

Mbak Nursyida has graduated from education development subject. She is worrying about Indonesian education system thats why she started to develop Sekolah Alam Anak Negeri (Anak Negeri Natural School) with Mbak Kris. It is happening in Indonesia. According to some practices in US, natural school recognizes the benefits of providing a complete educational experience. It is like deconstructing the meaning of education that should empower, rise humanity and environmental justice. It has been not easy though to build that small community, there are obstacles even from lack of government support. But now she is still consistent promoting how important reading and knowledge to build the community is. She accepted many aids from media and friends that are coming from different groups. While, providing good education is government main task. Government main task! Thats kinda ironic for me because I know the fact that local government there blamed her because they think she is trying to commit to a political movement and she is trying to make the community move to christianity than muslims.

What the hell is that? She is a good muslim though, and yeah we are Indonesia. Why are muslims too insecure that people will change them if they feel they have strong faith? Converting to christiant or chatholic or Hindhu is not that easy as saying two shahadat. Even my dad was a christiant he never forced me and my family never forced anything. In fact, she has built the community and make many women there empowered, they got job, I mean they have strong enterpreneurship and they are growing to be financially independent, and kids are all above average in formal school. Finally I realized that change needs movement, movement means friction, and she knows very well how to deal and get used to it. You can contact her on facebook here.

In that day, we shared many stories, I listened to her for hours and I didnt feel boring. She is just amazing and I am touched because she treated me like family though we never met before. She asked me to spent the nights in her home and kids, she introduced me to her big family, they shared private stories to me and they shared stories about how they collect for livelihood in traditional community there including conflicts of the society in coastal area.

In another chance, I have the opportunity to teach and inspire the kids there. Many of them are kids of Indonesian migrant workers and I am impressed by their eagerness to learn something new and curiousity. I know it is hard to grow without parents who has been leaving you for many years with no means of communication at all. So, I shared my dreams, how is it to be Junior Researcher, I introduced them to Einstein, Curie, Habibie and Sosrobahu through movies to raise their dreams. For me, creating own imagination of future is important as Einstein said, God never plays dice, our thoughts are part of the universe formula in the future.

I the end of the moment, I am impressed by their drawing and works of their future dreams. :)

So.. thats my story of meeting two good and sincere people who always inspire me to always do good things, no matter how others refuse you. They are true gold. Just like Lao Tzu said; when pure sincerity forms within, it is outwardly realized in other peoples hearts. Mbak Nursyida, thanks for the beautiful sunsets, best food and sincere hospitality! :)
